When Malayalee Orthodox Christians came to reside in the Detroit-Metropolitan area; they formed a congregation in the early 1970's. The congregation began holding small prayer meetings at local homes. A few years later, they decided to bring priests to celebrate Holy Qurbana. Very Rev. Fr. Yohanan Sakarathil Cor-Episcopa, Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Mundukuzhy Cor-Episcopa, Rev. Fr. Dr. M.K. Thomas, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Kurian Thottupuram Cor-Episcopa, Rev. Fr. T.M. Zachariah, and Rev. Fr. P. K. Mathew each came to various points to Detroit to celebrate with the congregation. These priests offered spiritual guidance and the opportunity to receive the Holy Qurbana to the Detroit community. Their services are remembered with deep respect and extreme gratitude. The guidance and efforts of Very Rev. Fr. Yohanan Sankarathil Cor Episcopa in helping us to form a parish of our own are praise worthy.

The congregation commenced services at Cass Methodist Church in Detroit and received the spiritual guidance of Rev. Fr. M. T. Philip (then Dn. M. T. Philip). On April 9, 1978, His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios, Rev. Fr. Philip Jacob and Rev. Fr. Dr. N.E. Idiculla (then Dn. N.E. Idiculla) visited the congregation. Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios declared the congregation St. Thomas Orthodox Church of India, Detroit, a parish of the American Diocese. Rev. Fr. Philip Jacob was appointed as the Vicar of the parish. On Oct. 17, 1978, the parish was registered in the State of Michigan. Regular services were conducted at Cass Methodist Church and later moved to Trinity Episcopal Church in Detroit.

The parish blossomed over the years and as the membership augmented, a new ambition arose. The congregation desired to build its own church. A five-year plan was implemented to raise resources to support the cause. Funds were raised through contributions, conducting raffles, and holding entertainment programs. the youth and the Martha Mariam Samajam deserve special recognition for their arduous dedication to raising finances for the church. In addition, we express gratitude to all those who generously contributed towards the cause.

On September 26, 1990, the congregation decided to purchase an existing church, the Apostolic Faith Temple, in Southfield, Michigan. Our church members once again demonstrated their commitment to our church by working collaboratively to renovate the church to satisfy the Indian Orthodox traditions.

On November 3, 1991, His Grace Dr. Mar Makarios conducted the consecration ceremony of our church. Since then, the new church has provided the congregation with a facility not only to worship, but also to hold cultural and spiritual events. Some of these activities include, Malayalam classes, retreats and youth days. Prayer meetings continued as well as weekly Sunday school classes. Sunday School has grown over the years thanks to the hard work of our dedicated teachers and enthusiastic students. Our Church has also been an active participant in the Ecumenical programs held in the Detroit-area.

The youth has become extremely active in our church. They raised money for the American Red Cross and Missions of Charity through a cultural show entitled "Yuva Chethana." This program was held in August of 1999. In 2000, the first MGOCSM chapter was established bringing our youth closer together.

In addition, our members have generously been donating to various charities including the housing projects for the poor in Kerala, donations for the children of those suffering from Leprosy, and many other charitable projects.

In 2005, we started another chapter for this congregation. We purchased the future house of service for St. Thomas Orthodox Church at 2850 Parent Ave., Warren, MI.

On June 13th, 14th & 15th, 2008 our new Church was consecrated by His Beatitude Paulose Mar Milithios Metropolitan, Successor and Assistant to the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan.

As the Church continues to grow, we are thankful for all the blessings the Lord has showered upon us.
